Starting problem: Partner HDI 2.0 90CV 2004


Hello everyone


I have a problem on my Partner


Indeed, it presents a problem when starting and especially when the engine is hot. When cold, the car starts.


The problem has appeared for almost 3 months, or it was necessary to start 2 to 3 times and especially hot engine (Battery in good condition).


I went to see my mechanic who removed the speed sensor installed on the gearbox, cleaned it and put it back in its place. The car starts with a kick of the accelerator.


From day to day, the problem persists... I went back to see my mechanic, he advised me to do a scanner.


The result of the 1st scanner test is that the problem comes from the speed sensor, I had changed it with a used original sensor.


The car starts, but not at the quarter turn, i.e. you have to insist on the key for it to start.


2 days later, I went to see another technician very experienced with the scanner, to do a 2nd test (Without informing him of the 1st test).


The result is that the problem is mechanical and comes from the 3rd cylinder.


Return to my mechanic to inform him of the results of the 2 scanner tests.


Meeting taken to check the engine and change the hydraulic lifter of cylinder 3 according to the recommendation of the mechanic.


When the engine is opened, the mechanic informs me that the problem is with the hydraulic tappet of cylinder 1 and not cylinder 3.


We decided together to change the 8 hydraulic tappets.


After reassembling the engine, and starting test, The observation is as follows: the car starts with difficulty even after 3 starts (fortunately the battery is powerful).


It remains to do a cold start test (in the morning) to see if the problem persists even when the engine is cold.


Thank you for sharing your experience with me, because at the moment I don't know what to do.


Nb: my mechanic suggests that I check the valves and possibly change them.

I think you need to visit a diesel specialist, Amar.......your vehicle has a high mileage now and therefore it's not the best idea to spend loads of money on it. However:
The big issue with these engines is the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. It's just not enough to clean them, they need to be replaced. They aren't too expensive but the genuine item is best.
If this doesn't help, then the diesel specialist should check the compression on each cylinder (they should all be the same). This should give an idea about the valve condition and cylinder health.
He should then do an injector leak off test, which measures how much fuel isn't used by the injectors but returned to the tank. Again, the amount of fuel should be the same.
If your engine smokes when it's running (black smoke) then the output pressure of the main injector pump needs to be checked.
I'm presuming here that the vehicle has had a recent change of fuel and air filters!

Yes, that is right the vehicle has had a recent change of fuel and air filters at 413281 kms
27 December 2022.

And I am not sure but it seems that from this date I have had this starting problem
 
Vehicles with various faults can be a issue with the earthing straps, give them a clean, whilst the battery may be strong poor contact on the negative side throws up a whole host of codes on scanners.

I agree. Lots of history of boxer vans having poor earthing straps. The resistance builds up within the strap and in this case I would suggest changing the strap. Not the battery earth but the one between engine and vehicle body.
