Evening all.

I’m not the best when it comes to building work but I’m trying to help a family member.

He needs to install a steel beam which is 5.2m in length and the distance between the two walls is 5m. The steel beam will obviously be sat on padstones and run 100mm on to it.

Running in the same direction you have 9 x 3 joists. Once the pocket for the beam has been cut out how would you manage to slot the beam in to position without compromising the joists and block walls too much.

A beam lifter will be used but I just thinking what’s the best way/angle to fit it in.

If you’re wondering why he won’t just pay a builder it’s because it’s a nightmare finding someone who will and this needs to be done fairly soon. We have fitted a few beams in before so we are not completely clueless but they have been put in place and then work has continued where as this one is being installed retrospectively.

Thank you

Isn't it 150mm for the bearing? Theres a channel on youtube called steve and alex (builders) which has a number of videos showing the practical installation of steel beams in the circumstances you seem to be describing.

Ideally you need more space on one end of the steel to offer it in, I used steel bearers on my knock thru , easier to drop steel onto than padstones which are easily disturbed if steel touches them.
Left small gap above steel and dry packed this.
