Strange roof timber construction (Ed.)

Hi all and thanks for reading ( presuming you do of course)
So I went up into my sisters attic the other day to have a look at putting some boards down to increase her storage space as she has 2 lads and not a lot of room, I am not a builder but was still dubious when I saw a wall holding up a ceiling joist and wondeeed if anyone has seen this sort of thing before? Is it standard??? Thanks Luke

Perfectly normal, as is the cantelevered purlin beam.

I’m a little surprised that building a wall was the path of least resistance to support the purlin beam, there isn’t one the other side, I wasn’t too worried about the purlin being cantilevered, more that it seems to be slipped but as mentioned I know very little about it, thank you for the replies

Clearly the right hand section of roof beam isn't getting any support from the left one that's being held by the wall. The splice joint appears to be upside down to be effective. Also the colouring on the beam undersides suggests that what you have isn't the original build. Was that two houses converted into one with chimney stacks removed at some time

So the section of the roof beam that is supported by the wall is spliced at both ends and is about ten feet long, dropped into the beams either side. It is a terraced house and the wall (if that’s what we call it) is in the centre and is, I presume a continuation of the wall below, so there since the original build?? I had just been up there with the hoover/duster if that’s likely to have made a difference to the colouring, if it’s safe then I’m not to concerned and will board round it but the splice on the other side is much more flush making paranoid this one may have shifted……
