Hello, firstly apologies if these have been answered already, I have looked but I couldn't find the answers anywhere.

We have recently moved house and decided to install a Hive "active heating with hot water" unit which has replaced my EP2002 programmer and hallway thermostat. I did have a bgmvsp-23 motorised valve fitted, which I replaced cable for cable with a Drayton MA1.
When I wanted to turn the central heating on with the old EP2002 programmer both the HW and CH selector had to move to the on position together (if that makes sense) and if I wanted the hot water on I could just set that to the on position by itself.

I have linked out the thermostat so that when I call for the central heating I am getting 240v at the 3 port valve (white cable) and the valve moves to the heating pipe. At this point the pump will start and every looks correct except for the fact that the boiler does not light.
When I call for hot water I can measure 240V on the the 3 port valve does not move and the boiler does light (which means that I am heating both hot water pipe and central heating.

The two questions I have that I hope somebody can point me in the right direction (PLEASE !)
- What am I missing in terms of moving the valve in heating position but not asking the boiler to light?
- What colour cable will move the 3 port valve to be ported to hot water pipe only?

I was convinced that there was issue with the old bgmvsp-23 motorised valve because I thought that the wiring was correct, and the valve itself looked like it had be bashed about abit so I replaced it with a Drayton MA1 which was a direct replacement. I have wired the cables like for like.

I am just at the stage where I am drawing the wiring out on paper to see if there is a mistake somewhere but because of the initial operation of the old programmer I thought I best check here first.

Thank you in advance everybody

Desperate Steve

When set to heating only do you have 240V on the valves grey wire? It sounds as if the orange wire on the valve is connected to the pump but not the boiler call. post photos of the wiring where the valve is connected and at the hive. Depending on the configuration you may need to set the hive to gravity mode so hot water comes on with the heating.

Thanks for the reply Echo, I have measured the voltage on the grey cable from the motorised valve. When the heating only is on I am measuring 66v between neutral and grey(and n-black, n-brown) - I don't know what could be causing this, I have removed some of the cables to see if something is dragging it down but I haven't spotted anything... I have continuity on the common and call cables.
When I call for hot water I measure 240v on the neutral and grey call cable.

I have traced as much out as I can without taking the boiler to bits or messing around with the cables that are still attached to the junction box side of the old ep2002. Image attached. A couple of those cables may be from the thermostat that I have linked out

The terminal block cables are as follows
1 x red (old thermostat)
2 x yellow (old thermostat)

3 brown (pump) red?
4 orange (3valve) yellow?
Black (cylinder stat call)

5 White (3valve) red (heating on from hive)
6 x blue red tag (always live)?
7 brown (cylinder stat com) yellow red tag (hw from hive)

8 grey (3 valve) grey (cyl stat sat)

I'm really stumped, does the boiler decide to run the pump? There is a cable that goes out of the junction box upstairs to (I assume) the boiler, one cable runs the pump, one starts the boiler and one is the neutral...

I have spotted that when the boiler is idle the lamp is a steady orange
When I call for heating the boiler light flashed green and orange, lights for about 2 seconds and goes off then goes to a flashing green
Could this be because of the odd voltage on the cylinder satisied ggrey cable?

Sorry to put this on you, I really approximate any help you could give me

Steve

Is It looking like I need to change the hive to run in gravity mode to set the hot water with the central heating?
I can see this working if I put a link from. The central heating call from the hive to the common of the cylinder stat, would I suppose is just the same as setting the hive to gravity mode....

You are missing the hot water off connection from the hive to the grey on the valve. Yes gravity mode will get it going. It looks like someone has stolen the hot water off wire to use for pump overrun. Had this same fault on thursday, I ran another cable in.

I see, thanks for that Echo. I will try and see if there is a spare cable up there and wire that in to the HW OFF. Do you think that this would be the cause of my motorised valve not going to hot water only position?

Steve

The valve should move to the HW only position if there is no power on the valves grey and white wires, it is pulled to that position by a spring inside the valve.
If there is power on the white wire the valve moves to the mid position.
If there is power on the white and grey wires, the valve moves to CH only.

your wiring looks ok from the photo. The boiler controls the pump. To get you going set the Hive to gravity mode, this should allow the heating to work.

When only Hot water is selected, if the cylinder stat is calling for heat it will send power to the boiler to run, as the cylinder call connection is connected directly to the boiler run connection (via the connector you have marked ?) there will be power on the valves orange wire, but this does not control the valve in any way.

If HW is selected and the cylinder stat is not calling for heat the valves grey wire should have power, again the valve will do nothing.

Does the valve move at all? it might be stuck.
The central heating call from the hive to the common of the cylinder stat, would I suppose is just the same as setting the hive to gravity mode....
If you did that you would never be able to switch the heating off.
