Suspended loft floor before boarding?

Hello all,

I was looking to board out the loft in the new year to be used for storage only. Our loft is a good size, bit of a awkward layout, slightly different levels but thought it could tackle it in sections. The section I was going to do it about 3x5m. So I started to pull up the old insulation to see what is there and to plan out what was needed.

The attached photo is a ceiling joist that runs from the main roof cross member (hope my terminology is right) to the party wall, about 3m in length. There is another ceiling joist either side of that shown in the photo, about 1.9m apart.

If that all makes sense, would you agree that it’s certainly not sufficient enough to build upon? Is this where a suspended ceiling is required? Is this beyond where an enthusiastic DIYer should go!

Thanks in advance!

PS forgot to add, house to as built in the 1910’s
