I have continued problems with the efficiency, performance and speed of my PC.
Could be related to this incident
http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=264932
I have tried most of the suggestion on this thread.
Downloaded paretologic PC Health adviser, which after a scan states fixes are needed but needs to be registered and fee payable even though advertised as a free download. I don't mind paying, well I do begrudgingly providing the programs are any good.
I also tried a system restore but when I run the restore regardless of which date I pick in recent past, a message appears can not be restored back to this date.
So how do I eradicate or/and solve my problems ?
And what is pchotify.exe?

I would recommend a fresh clean install, in my opinion this is thee only way to fully recover from being compromised, there is no other way to gain 100% performance from your PC by using 3rd party software that claims to fix or resolve malware/virus infection

A backup image of a fresh install would be ideal so if it happens again you are 10 minutes from a complete system re-install at no cost of an engineer or PC repair shop

Hope this help

Hello EFCLee1 and thank you for your input,
now bear this in mind when you read and hopefully reply to this post!
I am a complete idiot when it comes to understanding computers and how they work and I also get confused very easy.
So would appreciate it, if you could inform me what a fresh clean install would be and how would I (bear in mind idiot status but only too willing to learn) perform such a daredevil like act :?:

Firstly you need to remove any personal files from the laptop, word files music photos etc......onto a CD, DVD or Pen drive

Assuming you have a DVD writer you then need to download window 7, I cant advise you to do anything illegal so this is how you can do it legally

go to this link and download the trial version of windows 7, 90 days may not seem like a long time but this will no doubt show you how easy it is to install

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/cc442495

then go to this link, either print out or view on a different PC at time of install to follow it

http://mygeekreview.blogspot.com/2009/01/installing-windows-7-step-by-step.html

also once installed and near to end of trial try this. not sure if it works but it may extend you from 90 days to a further 30 or even more

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/extend-the-windows-7-trial-from-30-to-120-days/

Only way your going to learn is to jump in at the deep end, before I started my first college IT course I could already strip a PC and install windows (windows 95, haha). Nothing you do can break your laptop unless you hit it with a hammer

If you get stuck at any point along the way just holla!!

Hope this helps

Idiot alert!]
My current system runs on XP does that make a different?
If I did install windows7, what would happen when my boat is called in/time is called on trial period?
Laptops? are they small and furry?

Hmm well that's a bit of a conundrum, do you know how much memory you have and what processor you have

Right click "My Computer" and choose properties, first tab that's open is "General" its on here were it says youe processor and how much memory

Let us know what it says towards the bottom of this "General" tab

and stop calling yourself an idiot, just because you have never done this before doesn't mean that you don't have the capacity to learn it :) :)

Not good enough for Windows 7 am afraid, do you know anyone who is able to re-install XP for you, I charge £20 and if I have to back up data I add £5 but I am not a shop or a business which would probably be closer to £100

If you do decide to get professional to help make sure you ring around at least 3 people, all you need is a re-install you will leave no files on the PC

A backup image is a good idea so if this happens again you can go back to the fresh clean install as and when you need to

When I help out relatives / friends who have sluggish PC problems, I tend to give it a clean up first using ccleaner. Download and install it, then run it
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner
When the program starts, just click analyse (this might take a while) and when it is completed, click run cleaner.
When this is done, click the registry button on the left. Click scan for issues, then when thats done, fix selected issues. It will ask you if you want to back up your registry, i normally say no, but if you want to be safe say yes and save it to somewhere you will remember. When thats done, click fix all selected issues then close and you are done!
The first time you run it, it'll take a while, but if you run it again in the future (and you should!) it'll be quicker. I run it once every 1-2 weeks.
Also, do you have an anti virus installed?
If not, I would highly recommend microsoft security essentials; its free and easy to use, and also come top in many anti virus tests. Get it from here http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Of course, your PC may be beyond help, in which case it probably would be best to re-install windows. But if you do re-install windows, make sure you have a decent anti-virus and keep it clean with ccleaner, it will help prevent similar problems in the future!

Thanks for the advise, I already use ccleaner and MSE along side antimalware and antispyware programs.

There is a chap where I used to work that did all the design work and was shyt hot at the IT stuff, unfortunatly the place went into liquidation on Wednesday.
I used to have his number on my works phone but had to hand the bl00dy thing back in. :x
But I am not sure if a back up CD came with the PC, will have a look could be in the loft if anywhere.
I have most of my files on a pen, there will be some newish ones that need to be saved.

Hi PBOD,

Download HIJACK THIS, download the latest version from here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then "DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE" then post the log
Don't do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

This will show us whats running.

Done system scan and this is what was flagged up, happy reading;

OK a quick look and so far I count:

Norton
AVG
MSE
SAS
MBAM
Rappot, and
Comodo

A bit ott with the security and possibly the cause of your problems. I'll do a more thorough look later but a couple of questions,

Have your bank told you you need rapport?
Have you at any point been using network sniffing tools?
