Basically, my house is 40-50 years old and has an odd device inside.
This device looks a somesort of DC amplifier.

AT&T replaced my external junction box about a year or two ago.

My home telephone network only supports two wires since two wire pass through from the 4 wire patch from the external junction box.

I wanna dump this installation and replace it or completely get rid of it.
So bascally, can I get rid of this thing, or replace...or something.....

Here is a link to an image of the device.

It looks very primitive. Are you sure it's only 50 years old? I've seen stuff over here from the 1930's that looks more straightforward and much tidier.

Does it have two single-cores coming in at the top and leaving at the bottom?

What's that knurled black knob - an adjuster or a fuseholder? And what happens when you put a finger on each of those screws?

I think you would be best asking on an American forum

this is a UK bsased forum and over here we are lucky if we have 2 phone sockets, let alone an internal phone system
