We had a full width dormer extension built earlier this year which has dark grey cladding and a flat rubber roof. On warm sunny mornings there's lots of cracking noises as something expands. It responds very quickly to the sun coming out and the will be a cracking noise every few seconds a strong sun suddenly emerges, so I'm guessing it is the cladding itself making the sound.

At first I thought "Oh well, this must just be what you get with dark cladding materials". But now I'm wondering whether this is normal or if perhaps expansion was not allowed for properly during installation. Granted, it has been hot recently, but not out of the ordinary.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I believe that there should be expansion gaps filled with proper sealant.
Happens to our fibreglass roof because the osb panels were installed without expansion gaps.
You get used to the noise.
Hopefully won't affect the structure.
