Threading cables through joists - support need?

If cable is installed perp to joists, threaded thru a series on in--line holes in joists, does the cable need support additional to and between the joists? The gaps between are 320-350

Not that it seems to have made much difference to the original sparks that wired the house, there's a 1.5mm lighting cable that runs perp to joists thru holes, unsupported other than at joists.

What is recommended?

Thank you, yes, I use them when running cables along joists; they're quite popular. What is the max distance between clips? Should I knock up some batten supports between joists and clip at mid point, a bit of a faff but not really an issue. Or can I just rely on the joists when running perp to joists, as in the image?

No need for battens, that will be fine. Can't see any image.

Be aware, you can't just drill the holes anywhere.

Let them span the gap with no support but have a bit of slack so they droop a bit. If you ever need to shorten a connection at a fitting you will then have the slack to pull through if required. Nothing worse than having to remake a connection if you install a new fitting, only to find someone has cut the cables close to the ceiling or clipped it 2" before it goes through the ceiling.

I assumed he was talking about the bit along the joists turning from one hole before turning into another hole, rather than a straight run. It wasn't that clear in the OP what the situation was.
