I'm a new member but a long-time lurker. Normally I research everything but I can't find anything that relates to these two issues, I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction!
We're pretty competent DIYers and moved into our 1930s home approximately 2 years ago. A single-storey pitched-roof extension was built in approximately 2005 and we keep finding 'interesting' things as we're working our way through. The whole exterior needs a fair bit of attention asap and we're about to replace guttering on the back of the extension. I've notice the following two issues......
Firstly we're missing a bit of undercloaking (I think I've got that right) underneath the roof verge. A roof batten is exposed and although doesn't look rotten, it's clearly getting damp when the wind/rain is in a SW direction and I'm now convinced is responsible for a 'mystery' horizontal line of staining on the extension ceiling. I've attached an image looking upwards from inside (best I could do today), I've circled the area where the undercloak has fallen off and the green arrow is pointing towards the exposed batten (not particularly clear on this picture). The verge above looks sound, although we've not had a chance for a close inspection - we need to access from our neighbour's garden. Is it possible to replace just the undercloaking or will the verge need to come off and be re-pointed?
The second issue is with the extension's fascia. I've attached another photo and circled the area of concern. My understanding is that the fascia is pinned to the rafter ends? It appears that an extra piece of timber has been used here rather than wrapping the rafter end and finishing pretty much flush with the wall? The timber is currently exposed and doesn't look in the best condition. What might be the best way to tidy this up?
