Tiling on plasterboard

Hi guys

New to the site here so I'll get down to it, no trade background but I can fix aircraft, everything I am doing is from learning and just doing but also being safe.

I am in the middle of doing the bathroom up, I had to knock back to brick as the plaster came of along with all the tiles....now I'm not going to plaster I'm going to use boards.

I feel that the rest of the walls are in good condition and no more plaster will crumble off, so I don't want to spend a lot of dusty hours chiselling away at solid plaster then to spend more hours with a wire brush getting all the plaster dust from the blocks.

So would it be acceptable to match plaster board to the original plaster wall, it will all be covered in tiles afterwords anyway.

It depends on what tiles you are going to use, and how wet you expect it to get also how much work you want to do.

Assess the strength of the plaster and go from there. 20kg/m2 on good plaster skim. 32kg/m2 on plasterboard without skim. Remember that adhesive and grout will be about 2-4kg/m2.

BS 5385-1: 2018 is very handy.

Otherwise you could just appropriately board the lot (you can dab it out to about 50mm) and be satisfied it will last a long long time (plus you can create a even more level and even surface to tile on). Spending just £14 on a tile board when your tiles can be £20+m2 is a no brainer for me.

You could also consider a "pre plumed work wall" - so the whole thing arrives almost ready. Pretty cool idea.
