I intend to use a timber splice plate, such as this, to join two lengths of 6x2. When nailing, my understanding is a nail goes in every hole. However using the 4 plates as pictured, and 30mm nails, wouldn't the nails meet in the middle of the wood? As the timber's 50mm thick 30mm nails driven in from each side will clash/overlap by about 10mm. Is this intentional, or should I miss out alternate holes/rows to avoid this?

You could just offset one pair of plates by 20mm or so and they should miss each other.
