Looking at these doors:

I like em, but they don't have an unfinished option; factory lacquered seems to be the only delivery option. I need to give them a grey look, somewhere between a mid grey and anthracite, but they don't have to match to anything; just want a grey with tones of the grain so perhaps a transparent finish with a grey tint. (I want to keep the look of the grain, so not an opaque finish)

What are my options here? Not averse to stripping the lacquer, but if there is something that could go over the top of it it'd be less risky (visions of nitromors peeling the veneer too..)?

I wouldn't even consider trying strip a prefinished lacquered door, if you use a stripper that reacts with the adhesive that was used to glue the veneer on the door, you will delaminate the veneer.

Try and get the door unfinished then speak to the supplier to find out if the glue used on the veneer is solvent based or water based.

This was the primary concern..

I've since determined that I can get the door unfinished if I pay a hundred quid more per door and wait half a year.. For doors that are already in the catalogue as unfinished, they're 40 quid cheaper. C'est la vie..
