Under tile insulation boards

Hi All,

Sorry if this subject has already been covered, but I'm hoping to bump into someone on here who has quoted to install 6mm insulation boards onto concrete prior to putting down heat mat. I have plenty of experience with tiling as I renovate bathrooms for a living, but this is the first time I have been asked to lay insulation prior to the mat going down. The customer is supplying Blue Board, which I think might also be called XPS. I would be grateful if you could tell me what I should be charging per m2 if possible. I live in West Sussex if that makes any difference to the price.

It's not difficult to lay them! They are as light as a feather and easy to cut to shape.

The issue is making sure they supply the correct boards in the first place as there are differences, priming the floor properly before hand, using tiles adhesive to lay them, then priming them after for the tile adhesive . It's time consuming as you have to wait for the primer to dry

Thank you for your reply. I've used Marmox on walls in the past, but this is the first time I have been asked to lay insulation prior to laying heat mat. Do you have any idea what I should charge per m2?

The boards are supplied by an online company that only does under tile heating products. They apparently told my customer that they had a choice of Marmox or the Blue Boards. Both have the same insulation value, but the Blue boards are half the price. They did say, also, that the blue boards have more flex to them than the Marmox. I guess that will be my problem to deal with then! All I need to do now is work out how much to charge. I hate doing quotes, but then who doesn't

If done as per the instructions then it's just time consuming.
Prime the floor so there's a cost product & time albeit shouldn't take too long depending on size of floor space, I did 20m2 two coats and let it dry thoroughly.

Boards were laid using flex tile adhesive, took 2-3 hours depending on amount of cuts. Left overnight to go off. Joints were sealed and boards were primed twice which took time awaiting to apply second coat but no more than a day, again left overnight.

I then laid 15m2 Matt and covered mine with LevelIt2 compound to aid ease of tiling as the though of trying to tile straight over a Matt horrifies me :D

Thanks for the info. Your job was about the same area as the one I'm going to do so it's good to know how long it took you. Only problem for me is it spans 3 rooms, so its going to take a bit more time. I agree with you on tiling over heat mat. I've done a lot of tiling over mats and I always put compound down, as it not only leads to a better tile surface, but also it helps to better conduct the heat through to the tiles, and gives an even heat spread, without any dead or hot spots. Thank you for your time.
 
if in a bathroom which I have also done, the primer to cover the matts is a different product entirely and is like a blue paint.

It's a combination of a waterproofer and thermal heat primer

I know the stuff you mean, however I shouldn't have said bathroom, I meant downstairs toilet and basin area.

Sorry I can't help you with a quote but hope the 'time' scale might assist. If the area your doing is warm, the time to cure will be less obviously as my extension & bathroom are not plumbed in for heat just yet so drying is not that quick in uk temps :)
