the downstairs concrete floor in our extension is 'all over the place'
with regards to not being level,
it doesnt just slope , it has low spots all over , up to 25 mm difference in places,
it has vinyl flooring on at the moment and i was thinking of tiling,
is self leveling compound the way to go ?
my only concern with that is with the difference in levels i might be half way up the skirting board on one side of the room!

any suggestions welcome
thanks

It's not that important that your floor is level when tiling, what is important is that it's flat. You could use self levelling to get it flat - don't worry it won't all run to one end of the room, you still need to trowel it out.

had exactly the same situ here's what i did,

find the highest peaks and chip them off/grind down, then get a spirit level with a laser in it and use it to 'plumb line' or whatever you call it round the room with a pencil. you have to use a bit of judgement to find the highest point as a guide.

that line will be the level of your new floor all round.

get a heap of wooden battens and section off the room into a manageable segment up to the pencil line (for me it was 3-4 sqm). in the really deep areas to be filled get a couple of bags of ballast (a few quid a bag but saves on SLC) and fill where necessary. heap on the slc, (use a massive bucket to mix it and a drill whisk)

when dry the next day, you should have a large flat slab of concrete, tap out the batten carefully (could use masking tape on it). and redo the operation until floor is complete.

last step, find a masseur to sort your back out.

absolutely,
though not to be confused with a polish builder. - he will do your floor
for about 150 quid +100 on materials and 20 for vodka (no tea).

either way sounds good to me :)
