I have started to have to replace shattered gearboxes on our upvc windows - normally after having to remove the glass unit and twist the window open!

The windows all use Saracen 05058 gearboxes with toothed Shootbolts, which after years of lack of maintenance have started falling apart!

When replacing them, I’m finding a black
Compressible sleeve in the hole between the gearbox and the window frame surface, which I assume are to stop crushing of the frame. Problem Is, some are pretty knackered - and I can’t find them online anywhere under any name I can think of! Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

On a side point, does anyone know of a decent upgrade lock and shoot bolts that could easily retrofit into the same setup I currently have?

I've replace hundreds and hundreds of saracen gearboxes but have never come across these spacers, clearly the window fabricator felt the need to use them, in terms of replacements we/I tend not to replace like for like and use the oppurtunity to upgrade the mechanism very often doing away completely with the shootbolts and the reason being is we fit a twin cam system where by the pair of cams pinch each frame keep so the casement can't be jiggled out sideways, makes the shootbolt redundant

Interesting. The windows are over 10 years old and we were planning to replace them but change of situation has put paid to that plan!

I did try removing them from one window and found it started to crush the frame so I couldn’t get them tight - maybe it’s a less reinforce upvc window we have? I know the bigger ones are steel reinforced in the main frame and is actually screwed into the frames externally.

Would be interested in the actual lock system you are swapping with if you wouldn’t mind sharing - I really detest these as they are so lightweight for what they are used for!

We use DGS Elite system, a lot of double glazing manufacturers buy their ironmongery from them in bulk and its trade only

However you can buy espags like the Maco R.A.I.L or theres versions from ROTO or MILA, just google search window espag rods/mechanisms

You'll need the length and the handle gearbox backset, commonly 20 or 22mm
