Hi , Can any one throw any insight/help into this please.See attached pics for more.
House is approx 150yr old. Working ‘open’ coal fire in living room. Bedroom directly above that. Then the attic directly above that (which also goes part way over 2 nd bedroom) & has original stairs to access the attic.
The plan is to refurb it. Strip it out, has original latt & plaster.
We had a new roof out on & put a velux in where an old sky light was.
Next step is to : Re insulate, board, re plaster etc. Electrics etc, and create a study/bonus room.
However, On the back wall (see pics) there is a metal flue cover of some sort, when you remove it you can see the silver flue liner from a ‘long gone’ gas fire in the back part of the living room (which would have been two rooms originally).
It bends off into to the chimney stack above .
Below this (see pic again) is an ‘arch’ type wooden structure that is built into the wall.
Can anyone tell me the significance of the wood. Why it’s there, and more importantly what we are up against when we rip everything out. We are getting builders in to do the work, but if anyone can give us a heads up on why/what/how to deal with this. I’d be really grateful. I’m just trepidatious incase we are about to open a can of worms .
Just to add we are a terrace. But the house next to us is not on the same level/height as us. Next doors roof is a good few feet lower than ours.
