My computer even when freshly remastered (proper destructive recovery) has a virus. Won't let you near antivirus downloads, redirects google searches and being a general nuisance.

Is it likely this is now in the recovery partition? Is it possible for it to get so deep into the HDD that I would have to fit a new one? I've not come across this in many years of working on PC's.

Anyone have any advice?

Could be in the recovery partition, could also be your going on the Internet without antivirus.

Do you have a router, is the firewall turned on?

On another computer, down load RKill and also download an antivirus software. Move both these to a USB Stick. Read the RKill instructions on the link.

Plug the stick into the infected computer and run RKill. It searches out the infection and prevents it running so that you can then install and update and run your AV programs.

If it is redirecting your browser, it is more likely malware than a virus so put Malwarebytes antimalware on the USB Stick too and install and run it on the infected computer.

Thanks Dave, that sounds like a good thing to try. The cunning virus keeps turning the wifi card off when i try to run the setup from the avg file, so this may just give it enough juice to finish!!!...

From the description you give, it sounds more like you've inadvertently downloaded a malware program. Google MBAM and download that , then follow the instructions to update and scan your computer. This should get rid of the malware program.
Don't forget, once your computer is clean, delete all previous restore points and create a new one. (otherwise at some point in the future, you could restore it to a point where the malware program was on your computer. )

It sounds like your MBR is infected. After any major infection it is always a good idea to rewrite the MBR however doing this can stop the recovery partition from working although its always a much better idea to have the CDs anyway.
