They will make the job easier and they do work, just make sure you have a decent full bed under all of the tiles and that when you are tightening the wedges that you aren't pulling the tiles up together leaving a void underneath. If your sub floor is spot on you shouldn't need them though

And you want more of a slightly wetish adhesive mix than a dry one.
