Vivaro hiccuping

Wondering if anyone has any ideas what's up with my van.
Whilst driving is started to hiccup and a red stop light and red engine light with stop written inside it were flashing up. It did this every 300m or so then when going up a hill it did it again bit this time a big black cloud of smoke came out thr exhaust. This seemed to clear it a bit but was still hiccuping just not as bad.
Took it to the garage to run a diagnostic and no codes were shown. I'm still running it in the hope a light comes on the dash so I can get it back on the diagnostic bit it's running very poor, struggling to get up hills. Anyone anyone any idea what best to try first?

Why not ask the garage to road test it, not just code read it.

I'm pretty sure there will be trouble codes stored - I'd look for a diesel specialist if there is one nearby.
There's a fair chance there will be turbocharger issues, maybe combined with an EGR fault - but the only thing you can really do is to look for any split or missing pipes and trunking leading to the turbo.
