Thinking of buying a VPN service, ones IP will appear as if it is somewhere else.

Will this make, for example, bbc.co.uk (not that I use it, but my missus does) appear with all the adverts etc as it does when viewing it as if you're on holiday. Will it make all the UK-centric sites winge that "it's looks as though you're in Espania/Kazakhstan/Australia/Brazil, do you want to load that version instead"?

I want the benefits of a VPN, and for it to be transparently applied so it doesn't effect these types of localisation.

Once paying money to a VPN, do I just change some settings in the router? Does my ISP need to know? What is the best way to pay for a VPN service to maintain anonymity?

You may find that some sites ban you as a potential Spammer.

The only use of such services is to make it appear as if you are in a location you are not, with its main use being to access things in other countries that are not available in your current location.

What other 'benefits' do you imagine it will provide?

To encrypt all data along the link so my ISP, who might/are mandated by law to give up details about my internet usage, can still do so. But there will be nothing of use in the payload.

VPN provides great levels of security. I was with expressvpn who is great and recently changed to another for a slightly cheaper price.

Depending what router you have you may not be able to setup VPN on it and will require a different one, if you visit a VPN supplier site their technical section will guide you on what routers are compatible.

If you don’t set it up at router level and instead go for the app or program you are limited to how many devices you can use.

Expressvpn have servers in all different countries I use to simply login to the router gui select what country I wanted to appear to be in and voila it was that simple. The only downside with VPN is speed, if you pay for say 350mb broadband with your ISP you won’t get much more than maybe 50mb going through a VPN.

It comes with a built in VPN that is free.
And you can set where you wish to be seen to be located.

Based on what you've supplied and the websites of a couple of VPN providers, would I be right in thinking that I install a client just on one PC, then the other computers that are connected to my network are not connected through the VPN, unless I configure the router to handle it. (Netgear D6200 - which seems to have a VPN menu option/wizard). The former is fine, and probably preferable in fact.

My WLAN connection is via ADSL2+ so it's not superfast broadband, I don't mind there being a small overhead on certain applications as I set a speed limit anyway so as to not disrupt other users.

If you install the client on your pc, the other computers on the network are not using it - only your pc.

If you get a router that can accept a VPN then the whole network can use it.
 
I use NordVPN but every device has to run the app.

As said whole house transparent VPN would require a fancy router.
