I keep seeing really cheap VR headsets, which piques my curiosity. , but in a practical way, how do they work?

I assume you are expected to use your smart phone for the display, but how can you focus on the phone's screen, with the screen so close?

From 2014 to 2021, Google promoted the Google 'Cardboard' - a very cheap VR experience! A quick explanation here:
There are plenty of VR videos on YouTube, just search "Google Cardboard VR", should you want to build your own! :)

They are imo a 5 minute wonder.
Not enough VR stuff to make them a worthwhile purchase.
I have one somewhere I wasted £6 on.

Try the google DIY one.

Depends which VR units you mean , current modern ones are a few hundred quid and have lots of content, there are also VR gaming businesses where you can game as a group or individually in a VR shoot out .
