GF has a ground floor flat, the west facing wall seems damp and cold, and she complains of water staining above the three windows and one door in that wall. The wall is a solid 9" one, with no cavity. It has been suggested that she render the entire west face, including the wall belonging to the flat upstairs (part of a converted 1920s' semi). This is expensive, so before she goes ahead I though I'd council a few opinions as follows:
1. Will 1/2" of sand and cement really improve water rejection significantly?
2. Are there any 'waterproofing' additives that will achieve waterproof(iness)? If so, what are these additives called?
3. Is painting after rendering just as good as 2. above?
4. Any other suggestions (external insulation has already been considered, but rejected as the upstairs flat owner won't pay the extra.
