If I have a lamp that can take up to 100 WT, can I go up to 125 WT? How safe is this?

If the manufacturer decided to limit the lamp rating to 100W for a particular fitting, there was probably a good reason. Generally, the problem is the heat generated by filament lamps, in some light fittings with high wattage lamps the temperatures can get quite high. This could cause risk of fire or burns from skin contact. By the way, 125W lamps would be quite unusual, and anyway, would not be much brighter than a 100W one.

I put a 100W bulb in my bathroom, and left the light on all night. When i woke up next morning, the plastic around the bulb had melted and dripped all over the floor. The lampshade was hanging on by a thread. The whole stunk of plastic for a week. Looking back on it pretty funny, but something more serious could have happened. Pay attention to lamp rating limits
