Hello, I'm new here and a total amateur so please forgive anything daft I say below!

We had a very well rated carpet installer fit our landing and stairs with carpet last week, we purchased the carpet for a local carpet shop for him to fit and he provided everything else (underlay, vinyl etc).

Our previous carpet was fitted in a waterfall effect in that a small number of pieces were used along the length of the stairs and fixed by grippers at the bottom of each step on the vertical and horizontal (no gripper at the top of the step).

However this fitter looks like he has fitted each step at a time, using the existing grippers. The result / coincidence is that now it looks like this has been done in that you can put your fingers in the gap and in places feel the gripper - you can also see the black shadow between the steps as it looks to us that the pieces aren't long enough to fit properly.

Also, on one side you can almost get your finger in behind the carpet on a vertical part of the step (see picture).

He also fitted a new vinyl in the downstairs, he has fitted the new one directly over the old one, not glued it but simply put a massive amount of silicone around the edges (rather than what we used to have which was the vinyl sitting under the skirting board). The silicone itself varies hugely in thickness and in many areas he hasn't put any at all. If you walk around the edges of the vinyl or tap it you can feel it moving as it's not been attached to the floor.

There are tears, missing silicone and he has even used white silicone between the oak separator - which looks weird.

The previous week we had an engineered floor put down in the hallway and the fitter did a really brilliant job - it's a shame he doesn't do carpet!

Would you do this differently and do you agree this is a really bad job - we need to figure out how to resolve this with the fitter - should the carpet be replaced, should he be paid - that's what were unsure about.

Cheers for your help.

Cheers,

Jahn

Its been cut badly and threads have been pulled which could weaken the carpet in the future.
