Hi folks, I guess it's probably been asked before but I want to set up a web site, no need for any on line ordering or purchase type stuff, can anyone recomend a hosting service to go with, just steady and reliable for a reasonable price, whatever that might be!
I guess there will be a lot of different opinions on this, including what you would consider to be a "reasonable price", I don't want to spend a lot, but would rather pay a bit more for a better service, I'm not sure at the moment what the going rates are which is why I'm being a bit vague
 
My initial suggestion would be for you to use somewhere like 123reg and purchase the domain name yourself, then find a website.

If your hosting co gets it then it is often a lot harder and more expensive to take it with you when you leave.
 
I've used Heart Internet and am still with them. Quite cheap and also decent service. tbh I dont use it as a live site though as it was going to be for a business I was going to start at the time but ended up getting a permanent job.

A mate used 1&1 and they are similar, think he said their website builder was easy to use.

Oh, also I think he said google adwords was ok for advertising - Just dont go too mad on it or youll spend a fortune.

Plan ahead too as I think it takes a few months to get yourself up the google 'hits' on searches.
 
Don't know what you want to do with your site, but I use 000webhost, not had any problems yet, and its the best price, free!!
Theres a pretty good site builder in there, or you can upload your own.
 
I use "1&1" and heart internet, I would say that 1&1 is my preferred option, have been a customer for many years and the interface is well laid out with very little problems. Just occasionally I have found Heart to have slow periods.

The *only* reason I have used Heart over 1&1 is the fact that they let you use txt records for your DNS, something that quite frankly will be of no concern to you unless you run your own mail server and want to mess around with SPF / Sender-ID.

thanks for all the help so far, want to do a web site for my business, could do with around 10 pages, no need for e-commerce type stuff, just information on what we do, and how we work, then the usual contact details etc, got the domain sorted with 123 reg

If that is all you need it for then consider hosting it on your own PC or a dedicated PC somewhere in your house, on a 10Meg line u get 1Meg upload which is more than enough if you only have text and images, the images can be stored on photobucket and linked to your site

I can't say I agree with this. Apart from the technical skills required to install and run a web server, you need to consider security for the machine. Then if this is a business website it needs to be reliable, fast and up all the time. Broadband lines don't have SLA's, they have slower latency, no redundancy etc etc. For £2.50 a month you can get a hosting package - it makes much more sense to do that.
