What is Black plastic/rubber on back of dishwasher?

Hi what is this black plastic or rubber stuff on the dishwasher for?

I think it is used to stop the back “pinging” when rapidly cooling from hot.

That probably makes sense. There was a smell coming if it and I though a plug was over heating somewhere

Looks like sound deadening material, similar to what you find on the bottom of a sink.
