What is this down pipe made of?

Hi. I'm looking to paint an old waste down pipe outside my flat.

The paint has started flaking off but I can't really tell what material its made out of, to know what paint to buy.

Can anyone tell what type of pipe it is please?

It's on a 1960s (UK) building.

There seems to be what looks like concrete used to fill it higher up, which has gone soft ( see image 2).

looks like cast iron to me. A magnet would stick to it

if it is galvanised, the unpainted surfaces may look light grey

it will also sound different when you hit it with your paint scraper.

What's on the bottom of it?

Stand back and show any junctions or fittings

You will have to scrape off all the loose paint. If you roughly sand it to level it will not look too bad. It has obviously been dreadfully neglected.

Its been painted with bitumastic paint at one time surface paint wrinkled
If its not cracked or leaking a good rub down with power sander Undercoat and Gloss finish .

What type of paint should be used on these pipes?

The exposed part is mortar, but the pipe and bracket are most likely cast iron.

So a regular gloss paint will be OK for this job?

A regular outdoor metal paint, often sold for metal gates. Aldi/Lidl often sell a good such paint for that.

So the primer needs to be for metal?
B+Q do red oxide metal primer - Is that the right one?

I use a wire cup brush in an angle grinder and red oxide then chassis black, but thats cos I always have some in the garage I use it for car restoration

At the risk of arguing, and possibly frightening the OP
It might be asbestos cement?

Obviously if it's magnetic- ignore me
But test with a magnet first- before sanding it

I'm pretty sure its cast iron, you can see casting marks in the pipe, but its east to check just by tapping it lightly with a hammer, metal bar or whatever , it will sound "metallic"

You can see the ears cast on the socket and the bloody great pipe nails in them . That is cast iron They were always given a coat of black gloss, then another if necessary.
