What to seal a untreated wooden staircase with ?

Hi I have removed the old carpet from my stairs .The wood underneath is untreated .I have sanded the wood down and filled the edges that connect to the wall/Bannister .What would be best to coat the floor with ? Many thanks John
 
That's actually fairly common. In the days when stair carpet runners were installed which were narrower than the actual treads the visible edges would often be either painted or stained and (French) polished or lacquered. You can do this across the full tread, but the finish will wear quickly (stairs are high-traffic areas) and without a carpet they will be noisy

What do you mean by 'treat'? Are you expecting to leave it uncarpeted? In that case a thick cost of oil-based paint (on primer) is your best bet. Varnish will wear through pretty quickly.
