What's the best Anti-virus software?

Hi,
Can anyone please help?
I've been running AVG Free a/v for a couple of years, and it's been excellent, but since I've had to download the latest version, 2011, it doesn't update anymore. I get a message saying 'General Error'.
I've checked their website and FAQs, but no joy, and I see others are having the same problem.
SO, can anyone recommend a good alternative? Doesn't have to be free. I dumped Norton in favour of AVG because Norton was slowing everything down so much. (My PC is getting on a bit.)
Any advice and experience would be appreciated.
 
I stopped recommending a particular program years ago because everyone has their favourite which protects them and has not given them any problems so they used to argue that theirs was better than mine.

For information ONLY,
I use on the laptop:
Comodo Internet Security which includes Firewall, Antivirus, Defense+. It nags a bit when first installed until it gets to know what programs you use and what you download, but it then sits in the background and auto updates itself frequently.
Windows Defender Antispyware for realtime protection
MalwareBytes (MBAM) for weekly scans.
SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) for weekly scans on different days to MBAM
WinPatrol for its monitoring of what is happening in the background.

On the Desktop PC:
Comodo Firewall
Microsoft Security Essentials
MBAM (as above)
SAS (as above)
WinPatrol (as above)


Just because I use it does not necessarily mean it is the best, but they work for me, and I do occasionally uninstall one and try a newer version of one of the other freebies to see how it compares. So if you asked me after Christmas, my list may be different but still working to protect me.

I would have agreed with you a couple of years ago but they seem to have changed now. I use Norton simply because one of my daughters has bought me the triple pack every Christmas for years and I can't fault it.
 
Avast is arguably the best free antivirus in the latest av comparatives. Comodo is the best free firewall.

You dont need to pay £1000's to be secure (though macs aren't as secure as some think) you can do it for free.
 
I use AVG, and it runs well for me. I use it on my work PC as well and I have never had a problem with it
 
I never did until I downloaded the new version; 2011. Nothing worked.
So I removed it and downloaded it again and it's better now. Everything's there, and it updates every day, which it wouldn't do to start with. The problem I have now is that the scanner doesn't work, and looking on AVGs forum I see lots of people are having the same problem.

As far as I can tell I'm getting antivirus protection, which is the main thing. Maybe they'll sort the scanning thing with a patch or something. If not I'll try downloading again in a week or two.
 
Or just get rid of AVG which is bloated hard on resources and not that good and install a better Antivirus like Avast or Avira.
 
I use Kapersky. I prefer my Mac computer because there has never been a virus for Apple Macs. But as I have Windows 7 running by using Parallels for occasional use I have to have AV software just for the small Windows aspect.

Its because of the virus problem that so many people are 'switching' to Macs.

Wrong twice in one post well done. People are "switching" to macs because they believe all the hype and silly adverts, all of which is rubbish, and have more money than sense since they are getting ripped off. Like you. :lol:
 
So which virus or malware have you seen on your Mac. ? I never have and neither has anybody on any of the Mac forums. It would make interesting news if you could tell me what it was and when.

'All publicity is good publicity' it is said. That includes items such as this debate. Wise people see through the nonsense and are prepared to pay more for the quality. Bit like Rolls Royce V Ford.

Quality will always prevail for those of us who can afford it not that there's that much difference in prices taking how long Macs last without fault into account.
