Can anyone advise what is the purpose of this (if any). It is a piece of rigid plastic in the attic, set at any angle between the ceiling joists and the rafters. Thanks

Can't be a fire break.
Maybe the start of making a room wall
 
Looks to me like a length of twinwall polycarbonate roofing, no idea why it is there but that's what it looks like. Check if it has hollow sections with ribs in the middle and see through.
 
I agree with DAZB; first impressions are it seems to be a spare bit of poly carb roof sheet. Can't see any fixings, did a previous owner dump it there to stop stored items migrating into the depths of the eaves, thus becoming hard to retrieve?

It does have hollow sections in it. It is firmly suck in, it appears to have been placed there on purpose.

I think I'll just remove it
