Where does the waste trap washer go as it seems too large

Having had a blocked kitchen sink, I removed the trap and a broken small round washer fell out. I had a replacement 32mm washer, more like a rubber band but not stretchy, but it seems too large to fit inside the bottom trap part that screws onto the pipe.
Advice would be appreciated !

If the rubber O ring in your pic is not the same as the original then it's not likely to fit.

Many thanks for your reply
Apologies for my idiocy but this is totally new to me, am amazed I actually cleared the sink blockage.
The O ring that fell out looks identical to the replacement,
I thought it had to be. 32mm … are there smaller sizes and should the O ring fit halfway down inside the screw cap ?
The plumbing is about 40 years old.
Thanks again for any information.

As above ,the O ring fits onto the thread. At the top end of the thread there is a shoulder that it sits against, when the bottom of the trap is screwed up against the O ring it compresses it against the shoulder and makes a watertight seal.

I have attached a couple more photos. The top part does not have a shoulder, just thread. Hopefully the photos will explain my problem.

As there is no shoulder you have the wrong seal. Showing us a pic of the old seal would have been useful. What is the black area at the bottom ,inside the screw on base part? Is it rubber ?
You could just buy a roll of PTFE tape, wrap several turns around the whole thread ,and screw on the base part ,that would seal the thread without any washer / O ring.

Yes, the black inside the base part is like a solid rubber liner .. the shiny bit at the bottom is just water.
The seal that fell, out looked exactly like the new seal but broken.
I will buy some tape and try that. Hopefully I can then remove the bucket !
Thank you very much for your help.

The black rubber in the base is the seal. When tightening up it compresses against the bottom of the trap.
Wind the PTFE in anti clockwise direction ,in other words the same rotation as you would screwing on the base to the trap.

Ahh that makes sense … so the black ring that fell out was just a bit of the inbuilt black rubber part!
Is the inbuilt rubber part replaceable, or is that screw on part with the rubber inside still available to buy?
If not I will buy the tape and do as you suggest.
Again, thank you.

I very much doubt that spare parts are available for the trap. PTFE job ,or replace the trap !

As above, replace the trap. Not worth faffing about when a new one costs less than a tenner.
