I said I would try to recover some photos from this Lenovo. My experience is with desktop and towers.

No.

Not that I can see. I wonder if it has SSD?

Don't know what to look for.

Sadly the startup password is not available. The user left me some passwords on scraps of paper but they seem to be for other things. Might there be a default?

If you can boot from a different drive, then you can access the embedded drive without password, assuming the embedded drive isn't encrypted.

Please tell me more. Can I prepare a memory stick to boot it?

I believe it is Win 10, it's 3 or 4 years old I think

Booting Windows from USB is possible. But, I have never done it before. You will have to search for it. You may be able to boot from a repair CD or installation CD and get access to the drive. Theoretically, if you are able to attach another drive and then boot from CD, you may be able to copy files using the dos prompt (command console) available in the install-or-repair facility.

A bootable linux USB drive is easier to do than a bootable windows USB drive.
