Which of the two brown wires is live????

I am in France and am replacing a ceiling light but both wires are brown and I don't know how to test safely which one is live - please can anyone help?

Use a multimeter?

probably the one on the left, or it could be the one on the right.

you really do need a multimeter to find out, not a neon screw driver
