We paid a tradesman to re-do our bathroom in April 2023. Full renovation job in top floor flat. A couple weeks after the job was done our downstairs neighbour reported water coming through their bathroom ceiling (below our bathroom). Our original plumber came back after the ceiling was dry and organised this to be re-painted which it was. Our bathroom smelled like damp for weeks, trying different solutions offered by the plumber. This ended in the plumber lifting the floor in the bathroom and removing ash deafening (old house) and we put the floorboards back down ourselves.

We noticed our new boiler was losing pressure (having to top up the pressure daily) and we had a couple of other plumbers in to look at this, the consensus is that there is a leak somewhere. This is confirmed further by inspecting the downstairs neighbour's bathroom (recently moved out) and wet patches have reappeared on the ceiling, indicating a leak is present under our bathroom floor.

Query:
We contacted the plumber who did our bathroom and he has agreed to come and look under the floor again but if he finds nothing then he wants payment for this but if he finds something it won't cost us anything (he admitted the original leak was his fault). Should we be paying him if he finds nothing?

It's reasonable if the pressure loss is nothing to do with his work and can be traced to another problem, but it's not reasonable if he "finds nothing". You of course have not made any claim against his for the impact of the defective services and there are clearly ongoing issues with the damaged caused first time around.

In summary, just because he cannot find a problem doesn't mean he is not responsible for the ongoing repairs and damages.
