Why Are So Many Gbit Switches Not?

I am moving from Plusnet to BT.

We are having FTTP installed and need to ensure all our hardware is Gbit compatible.

There is a 16 port TP Link TL-SG1016D in the lounge, connected to the existing PN router.

This says (and I hope) that it is Gbit.

There are going to be 4 other switches round the house and I need to make sure these are Gbit too.

My problem:

There are lots of Gbit switches for sale.

But delve into the reviews and many of them complain that only 100 Mbps is achievable.

Does anyone know of a 5/ 8 port switch that is genuinely Gbit?

If the links between are only 1gbit then that is what will be shared between any devices on that switch (bridge).

What you need to look for is the throughput or mps of the switch.

I always assumed most switches on the market today provide the full throughput needed but it's worth checking anyway.

I wonder if the reviewers were plugging in 100Mbps devices though? A lot of stuff around still only has 100Mbps ports (like TVs)

SW, thanks. I'll check the throughput.

Joe, thanks. I did think that maybe that's what was happening. You can't expect Gbit when the thing only runs at 100Mbps...

Have just spoken to a guy at ebuyer who has given me links to look at

I'll update later.

For anybody here because they are looking for a recommended Gbit switch, Netgear GS105 /108 seems to get the best reviews.
