Why to buy kitchen unit carcass

Hi all,

I'm replacing an under counter fridge with a kitchen cabinet. Can reuse the door that's on the fridge, but where's best to buy carcasses?

I was looking on b&q a year ago and they had what i need. They discontinued the range though and the new ones terribly reviewed, has 3mm hardboard instead of 12mm chipboard.

Wickes don't seem to sell carcasses without doors.

I just need a very basic one. Ideally all in dark brown to match the others, but it's only the inside you'll see anyway so doesn't matter.

Any recommendations? Best I've found so far is screwfix for 80 quid. Spending less would be ideal but can't knock screwfix customer service.

Thanks. I did look on there but can't find carcasses, only units with doors. Do they sell carcasses?

I also don't trust Ikea - I bought a king-size bedframe from them, and it doesn't match the size of every other non-Ikea king-size mattress.
 
they do sell just carcass , we had some issue with the bed, i think 3 cm larger
got rid of the bed now
i did get an ikea carcass and remake to fit where a fridge used to be in daughters old kitchen flat, was a lot of work, but very cheap and that was the name of the game then

thanks for your reply. would you mind saying a bit more about why it was a lot of work? I was hoping in my case i should just be able to slide out the old fridge, and effectively slide in the new cabinet unit...
 
different length then the old carcuss, nearer to the ground, so needed different feet and also door alignment and hinges -

service void , much smaller , which was an issue as we had pipes and cable needed to change
and its white

i would not think they replaced 12mm with 3mm
is that the backs ?

yeah just the backs, but all the reviews say that makes them noticeably much worse!

i dont remember kitchen units with 12mm backs - i have not fitted loads
But 5 kitchens , Wickes, MFI, B&Q x2 , homebase
all had 3mm ish backs that slotted into the carcuss
 
Hmm fair enough. I've not fitted loads either, just almost every single review of them says how bad that new range at B&Q is!! and many mention the back panel being too thin.
 
i suppose you could purchase some MDF or plywood at 12mm and fit in the back service void , but the slot will not be wide enough , so will need to be screwed in from side or brackets to hold on.
although the cost is probably as much as the carcass
do you have anything at the back needing a service void ?
 
actually just looking at the wickes ones (that are supplied with doors), they also have 3mm back, so maybe that itself isn't a problem, as you mentioned.

Must be something else about the B&Q ones that people hate. The Wickes ones costs 2-3x as much and are well reviewed.

Maybe i'll just buy a wickes one and give the door away to anyone that wants it...
 
wickes are the best i have used , compared to the others
they have a few quality ranges, but i think that is mainly the doors
also magnet may have something

when we were looking last (18 mths ago) B&Q had just stopped kitchens and made all their kitchen designers redundant , literally on the day we went round looking and the atmosphere in B&Q was terrible, perhaps some of the reviews are from that period of time.

I noticed the other week, that homebase, (ex bunnings store ) is now refitting for more focus on Kitchens and bathrooms - maybe a deal there to be had
