Wife and son painted decking with fence stain

I painted the fence with Ronseal Red Cedar fence stain a few weeks ago, and she’s been nagging that it looks rubbish with the decking not painted. Arrived home this evening to find out her and the 7yr old have painted the deducing in the same stain.

Obviously the divorce letters are in the post, but what is the best way to go from here?

It’s only a small decking, thank god. And it actually looks good, but I’m guessing the Ronseal stain will last no time with people walking on it. Is there something clear I can put on top of the stain, such as a sealer or something, just to make it harder wearing?

First, please hug them for me. I can imagine how proud they must have been. I hope you managed to hide your disappointment?

Possible diplomatic solution: have a pressure washer (or hose and stiff brush) at hand, send them out on errands when heavy rain is forecast (in the next few days here), and wash it off. Blame the rain.
You then have 48/72 hours after the 'rain' stops (which may not be until next week) to find, buy and apply a decking stain.

Fingers crossed that saves your marriage.

P.S. don't forget to hide the hose afterwards.

Years a ago I spent an age and a small fortune treating my decking with the proper stuff for it to only last a year. Now I slap some fence paint on it in spring and again mid summer and it always looks good, only takes an hour to do and costs peanuts.
 
can someone explain in plain english why you shouldn't use fence paint on a decking. ta
 
And the fence paint is unlikely to adhere to whatever the decking was painted with.
