Hello,

There’s a large gap in the side of my window frames, I can see the outside through the hole.

What should it be filled with?

Thanks

You can fill the gap between side of frame and brickwork with expanding foam which helps insulation and stabilises the frame in the opening. I prefer something like exact gap foam as it doesn't expand too much. You still don't want to pump too much in as it can expand a lot. If you do get excess expansion outside the gap, wait for it to dry them trim with a knife or other blade.

To finish you can cover the gap and foam with some silicone sealant outside. Inside can also be done in silicone or some caulk. Silicone needs to be done carefully. If you get it all over exterior brickwork it's almost impossible to remove excess. Excess silicone inside over the plaster will make it difficult to redecorate as paint won't stick to the silicone overspill. Steady hand needed with silicone, just enough to fill the final gap. If it's somewhere downstairs that is visible I often put a strip of masking tape on the brickwork to get a nice line and avoid getting excess on bricks. Remove the tape after while the silicone is still wet/tacky.
