Wiring a Drayton actuator

Hi all,

I have just replaced my actuator on my central heating system, but I'm unsure on the wiring. It has 5 wires. Blue, brown and green/yellow, which I fully understand and have connected to the live, neutral and earth ports on the junction. But it also has a grey and orange wire. The instructions say one is normally open and one is closed. My question is, where do they need to be wired to on the junction? To a red or a black wire? Thank you.

Actuator? Is this a valve or something else?
How was the old one connected? Did u take photos?

there are a thousand ways that wires can be connected. There’s no standard way to use them especially as this sort of stuff is often fitted by plumbers.

Yes it's a valve. I was going to post in plumbing but given that it's the wiring I need help with - well here I am! I'll take some pics when I get home

I assume you have 2 actuators ?

If so, connect the wires to the same point as the other actuators orange and grey wires is a good idea

@The Novice ah that makes sense. I'm not sure what a wiring centre is - it goes to a black plastic junction that also serves the pump. So the grey will go to the same one that the live pump wire goes to you think?

@AndyPRK no I just have the one. And the old one had different coloured wires and 6 instead of 5. Hence my confusion!

this isn't gonna work!

6 wire heads are mid position, 3 port valves with 3 pipe connections.

5 wire ones, are for 2 pipe connections

It's definitely a 2 port valve. It's a Drayton. The old one was a sunvic. The old one was 2 port as well. I think one of the wires on the old one was spare. The problem is that it had different colours. There were no grey or orange wires on the old one. That's why I'm a bit confused over what goes where

Brown+Blue - L &N to valve motor (via thermostat etc)
Orange -Aux switch common
Grey - Aux switch NO (ie open when the motor is not energised, closed when the valve is fully open)
Green/Yellow - Earth

https://www.draytoncontrols.co.uk/sites/default/files/Motorised Valve Installer Guide.pdf

IANAHE but AIUI - the thermostat, programmer etc energises the valve motor to call for heat, and when the valve is fully open, the aux switch closes - this is used to tell the boiler to fire.

Thank you I'll have a look at the guides you have sent. In the mean time the image is how I've got it wired up at the moment. I need to explain this clearly: the black cable is

from the actuator. The white cable is from the pump. You can see the live, neutral and earth wires from the pump go into the box at the red, black and green points respectively. (red blac and green being the mains supply).

So I have wired the actuator L, N and E into the same ports as the L, N and E of the pump.

The orange wire is currently in the end port which is a blank. And the grey wire i have just taped up for the time being. So the question is, should they both go to a live (red) port or should one go to a black port? Thanks so much everyone for your patience with this

You could run it like that and see if it works.

It’s not perfect design.

Oh and cut if that stray strand between blue and green.

Do you have a pic of the old valve wire colours ?

the black cable is from the actuator. The white cable is from TO the pump. You can see the live, neutral and earth wires from TO the pump go into the box at the red, black and green points respectively. (red blac and green being the mains supply).
How will the pump ever stop?
