i wonder if it is safe to use the neutral wire in 14/2 wring to use as hot.

i am planning to add a switch to a light on the ceiling in the basement and i want to use 14/2 and run all the wires to the light switch and use the black to feed the light switch and the neutral(white wire) to feed the electricity from the switch to the light?? i know you still can use the white wire for HOT and MUST MARK it as a HOT(live wire). is it safe to use just one 14/2 to run both ways from the light switch ????

Thanks

over here in the uk it is the normal way of wiring to lightswitches

as long as you appropriately mark the white core and the white core has insulation of the same thickness as the hot core i really can't see a safety issue

what if anything your regs have to say about it is another issue

Running a length of Romex like this as a switch loop is perfectly acceptable under the NEC.

However, the convention for which wire is which is the reverse of the way you state, i.e. the white is re-identified black and used to feed power TO the switch, and the black is used as the return from switch to light.
