Wooden upstand

Evening,

Just wanted bit of advice about fitting wooden upstand to an oak countertop. I've tried sticking it to the wall using fast grip silicone but even after bracing it and leaving it overnight when I remove the bracing some bits 'ping' away from the wall.
The upstand is a nice bit of oak and I'd rather not screw or nail it to the wall and then have to plug the holes, so is there any sort of adhesive I could use that really will stick instantly or any other suggestions of what to do?
 
could you use some gorilla glue along with some gripfil/silicone and rebrace over night and see?
 
I tend to biscuit or dowel wooden up stands onto the back of the worktop before installing them although this is only where the grain runs in the same direction as the worktop. For the corner areas where the upstand runs across the grain of the worktop I silicone to the wall alone

Sounds as if your walls aren't flat or straight or your timber is perhaps twisted. You may need to remove a bit of material from the back of the timber , power plane is good for that , to allow it to touch more of the wall. Fit it dry first and you'll be able to see where it rocks , that's where it would need a bit removing. Alternatively , a bit more work and messier is to fit grounds or battens to the wall which can be chopped into the plaster to stop the upstanding sticking out too far. Upstanding can be glued to the grounds. Additionally have a look where it has "pinged" off the wall , has it removed a layer of paint maybe? Any glue is only as good as what it is sticking to.
