Some door knockers incorporate a letter box, known as postal knockers. There are horizontal and vertical postal knockers available. If just a door knocker is required, there are many styles available. A door knocker is normally fitted to a front door instead of a door bell.
Decide on the position of the door knocker. Use a spirit level to check its horizontal or vertical site. There should be protruding lugs at the back of the knocker which need to be secured from the inside of the door. Once in the correct position on the outside, push the knocker firmly into the wood in order to mark the positions of the lugs.
Drill holes in these positions, and by holding a spare block of wood on the other side of the door, you will stop any splintering of wood as the drill bit passes through. Smooth any rough edges on the inside of the door with glasspaper. Screw the bolts into the lugs on the back of the knocker and push them through the holes in the door. The bolts are supplied to fit all door thicknesses and they could protrude further than required on the inside of the door. Tighten the fixing nuts and a hacksaw can be used to cut the bolts back if necessary.
