So I have an existing stand alone garage of cavity brick construction that needs a new roof and roof joists, currently the brickwork is about 1900mm high and as I'm putting a new roof on, i'd like to raise the overall height to 2500mm (it's on a boundary).
My plan is to build a stud wall about...
Hi Guys,
I am going to be installing a CCTV system on my property this week, though i have been skeptical on how to hide the wiring on the external brick wall. I do not want to recess the wires into to wall or through the cavity. I would just prefer to cable clip the wires on the brick wall...

Hi
Please see pics included, the utilty area is single storey and the kitchen area will form the ground floor of the two storey extension. The inner blockwork forms the cavity wall between the utility and the kitchen and will carry on to form the inner and outer blockwork for the two storey...
Some of the houses on our street were all built by the same developer and thus had the same lean-to we currently have as seen in the picture below (originally used as the outside toilet). I've thought for a while about extending it to house more utilities but I'm not sure if this is something...
I'm putting in another wood burner in (this time in the kitchen) and have a question regarding the stove flue pipe. I only have a very shallow depth up the chimney flue (9 1/2") for the stove flue to go into.
Structurally, would there be problems if the cast iron flue from the stove was say 2"...
Hi all, planning a new kitchen and wondering about narrowing the back door so as to fit larger units onto the adjacent wall. Current door is 2134 x 915mm, solid wood, framed in brick work. Its a big door for the size of the kitchen, would actually prefer it to be smaller so it swings out less...
We have opened up a fireplace to install a woodburning stove (hasn't everyone...), which exposed the original supporting brick arch above the builders opening. We don't want the exposed brick but we do want to retain the curvature of the arch. I want to plaster over it but I'm struggling to...
I'm prepping the fireplace in our front room for a new log burning stove. All of the brickwork/mortar is sound but I want to cover in 12mm concrete board (HardieBacker), as this is what I've been advised to do by the local authorities.
First of all, is this gap necessary? No problem at all if...
Hi guys (photos attached)
I recently moved in to a Victorian terrace and I'm in the process of giving it a bit of a face lift. This includes replastering the hallway.
In the hallway there is an arch, which had been hidden away behind a stud wall, and the arch itself was covered with wallpaper...
There was a big crack and hole in the plaster of our chimney breast so my wife started hacking at it and things escalated haha - My main concern is the archway section. It seems to be concreted up, is this usually to support the archway itself or maybe its just an aesthetic patch to square off...
I have a 1910 London house covered side and back with limewash, then masonry paint on top, it was like this when we bought it and have been trying to figure out how to remove it ever since. The masonry paint is fairly loose and peeling in most areas (common for paint over limewash).
Chemical...
Hi guys.
I have a bedroom that I need to knock the 2 external walls back to brick (blown plaster), the house is double slim with cavity installation.
My query is can I just dot and dab 12.5mm plasterboard to the brick or do I need to batten the walls, fill with insulation and then...
Hello there,
I know this is something that is asked very frequently, but I have a question about possible asbestos. It's something that has recently come up in conversation, and I am hoping that somebody here may be able to tell me that I am talking nonsense, and what the walls are actually...
We have an old fireplace which has been plasterboarded and plastered over. In front of this we have a wood burning stove, with a pipe which goes up to the original chimney in the roof. (outside the wall up until the chimney in the attic).
The plaster behind the stove is cracking.
From tapping...
I've had to remove the plaster on the side of our chimney breast. I'm going to batten it and reboard the side but i'm not sure what to do with the bits on the front of the fireplace.
As you can see from the picture I've had to hack off some of the loose plaster, when it gets skimmed next week...
hi
Stupid error on my behalf. It's a .7m x.7m hole.
Can I retrofit by grinding out some mortar, slipping in some flat metal ties and remortaring?
It will be hard walked and skimmed so prettiness is not an issue here.
Thanks
Hi guys, I really want to knock down my outdoor toilet. It basically falling apart anyway. The toilet has been taken out and capped off. I own the house. Forgive me for being silly but can I just start knocking it down carefully with a sledgehammer?
I am planning on having a large brick shed built against the side of the house (approx 2.5 Mtr wide x 6 Mtr long), it will not be closer than 2 Mtr to the boundary fence and will be inline with the front elevation of the house. I have read through local council PD documents, been on the planning...
Hi there,
I just moved my radiator from an exposed brick wall, and on moving it there were two holes, about 4" diameter and 2" depth. Looks like someone had tried to fix the radiator previously and made a mess of the brick, and just placed the radiator over it.
I was wondering what the best...
