Hi all,
Just having a small showeroom refurbished. After stripping down the old wall tiles, my builder said it seems that the window has no lintel on the outer skin! The inner skin seems to be supported on a 'timber' support.
The window is upvc and is 50cm wide, and has a height of 90cm.
Can...
re the right hand black line on the wall drawn over the crack with a thick permanent marker; the lintel below that cracked wall is redundant, the opening that required the lintel is now blocked up but still not rendered (image), there doesn't appear to be a corresponding vertical crack in the...
Good afternoon,
This is my first post on DIYnot :)
I live in a bungalow and am about to knock through from my old kitchen (which is becoming a bedroom) into the cloakroom toilet. I will then make a stud wall in the old kitchen to make the cloakroom big enough to fit a shower cubicle.
I have...
I'd like to convert the fireplace into a tall craft cupboard, I might even make it look secret.
Does anybody know if there is a limit to the maximum height I can install a lintel in the chimney breast? Thanks in advance.
Hi all,
We are in the process of building a new garage and a brickie is going to face our block walls and build pillars and apex etc.. we have left three 500x900 gaps for Windows on the block wall immediately below the roof plate. There is to be no cavity as such between the block and brick...
It took us a while to realise what had happened here, even though we knew it didn't look right ....
We could never quite figure out why the window man put in a window that was not as high as the opening cut by the builder. But this weekend we realised that was because the builder cut the window...
Hi all,
I'm currently removing some patio doors to shorten the opening height to allow for double doors and a wall plate for a flat roof which will run across the sagging soldiers. I'm going to add a lintel as there's no external one at present (1930's semi). I just wanted to know if it's OK to...
Hi all,
Hope someone can advise! I have recently purchased a 1900s terrace house and the living/dining room have been knocked through into one open plan room. Upon taking the (many) layers of old wallpaper off, we've discovered two cracks, approx 1-2mm running up each end of the concrete...
I am to open the wall between the kitchen and dining room. The wall is bearing the load of joist of a bedroom above it. There is no other wall above it nor stud wall just the joists.
I am looking at installing 2700x100x65 lintel. My question is what is the minimum length on the breeze block...
Hi, I wonder if anyone reading this could give me some advice please..
I have attached a pic. Basically I want to rip the window out and fit some french doors.
However the stone lintel above the window isn't long enough.
Would I be able to put a steel or wooden lintel in here like 5.5ft long ...
I am having a room re-plastered in a house I am renovating for rental. The plaster is old and has been taken back to brick.
The exposed brickwork now shows an unusual arrangement around the window. To my untrained eye, it looks like a previous owner has attempted to reduce the size of the frame...
Hi all,
My house has "stone" lintels over a number of the windows. I say "stone" as I think they may be man made as they are really soft and permeable and on one I think I can see concrete in the interior where it has weathered away.
Anyway, they are useless and rain soaks through them so I am...
Hi Everyone,
I am putting an extension on my house (3 bed Semi) and we are opening up the back of the house to make it open plan. The steel calculations have come back and I have to put in a 8 m 305 x 305 118 Universal column which is 1 tonne in weight.
My problem is the restricted access I...
Hi, I've been a visitor to this site for a few years, it's the best. I'm in the process of doing some renovation work on an ex 1950's ish council house I bought recently. It's previously had various work done (some good and some bad). The picture shows a window that's been fitted in place of the...
My builder has knocked a doorway from the side of the house into the new garage. I noticed there was no lintel above the new doorway and he said it doesn't need one as the wooden frame acts as one (the wooden door surround etc).
This doesn't sound correct to me but Im not a builder. Can anyone...
