Hi all,
We're getting pretty close to completing on a 1920s/30s solid wall semi, so I've decided to finally stop lurking and make an account here.
We had a survey done prior to exchange which noted high damp readings in a couple of places, as well as a few potential causes:
1. Pebbledash...
Hi,
I bought some No Nonsense 649+ Specialist Mortar Repair Cement to fix some cracks in a path. My missus also wants me to fill the gap along the bottom edge of the garage wall.
As the driveway is lower than the garden the path actually sits higher than the bottom of the garage, so no DPC...
Good evening everyone,
My next job in the landscaping project is to render the retaining wall (see photo). Is there some info online that provides any info? I've watched a few YouTube videos etc but wondered if anyone has any nugget tips?
I will need to get some beads for the corners and some...
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some advice on how best to fill these external cracks / gaps on the front of my 1950's Semi-Detached property.
The first image shows cracks in the top corner of the concrete / cement (?) around the window.
The second image shows a crack in the pebble dashing...
I would really appreciate opinions on this. I'm considering buying an end terrace house but the state of the render, or the potential expense of replacing it, is putting me off.
The render is fully intact and feels quite solid to touch, but when tapped it seems hollow in places so I presume...
A builder says it is bonding plaster, another says cement, the postman says it is a medieval cob wall, and Mrs Bucket down the road thinks its her lost cat.
For the love of god, put Mrs Bucket out of her misery and tell me this is some kind of cement render.

Hi all,
We are in the process of buying a new build and our snagger highlighted a damp patch on the VPI monocal render. The developer (small developer - only 10 houses in total) went to VPI straight away and the response from the contact there was as follows:
"The Monocal render that has been...
Looking for some advice on a property. Cracks in render are where extension (circa. 1970s/1980s) meets original building (circa. 1920s). Survey came back to say there’s potential progressive movement. There are no render cracks on the ground elevation, damp cause is fine and there’s no rising or...
Hi,
We have had these wet patches appear above a new window - window was repealed by the company but every time it rains the patches spread & get worse. We have discovered multiple cracks in the render where the wet started so we are getting the house re-rendered. I just wondered how long it...
Hi!
Recently purchased a C1856 settlers cottage that was assessed as having rising damp during the pre-inspection. Got an "expert" out to check and they confirmed rising damp, which they can fix for bulk coin. Been reading this forum and I am 100% certain I can do something about this without...
Hi, newbie here and a foreigner too, so bear with me as I'm trying to explain the issue
My neighbour wants to render their extension, which happens to be a boundary wall going into my back garden. Very narrow back garden, may I add. Before I go into the actual question I want to clarify that I...
I’m looking to repair a crack in some render but I’m not sure how the original finish was achieved. I’ve attached a couple of images, does anyone know how this effect is achieved? I initially thought it was a tyrolean gun finish, but it seems too smooth in between the bumps for that to be the...
Hoping for a bit of advice. We have a single garage not attached to the property, but shares one wall with the neighbours garage. Since it’s too small to fit most current cars, I’m looking at converting it to an office, and to do this would require blocking up the garage door, which I’ve come to...
Morning all.
Currently doing some repairs on my 1897 Victorian house. I am pretty certain that the solid walls are ashlar facing with a rubble backing but trying to figure out the material of the ashlar itself. From reading, it could also be Ashlar render which was popular in 19th century. You...
Hello all,
I have Internal aerated concrete blocks (aac) that have been painted.
I've read https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/wet-plastering-aerated-lightweight-blocks.177624/
And I'm undecided on what I need to do.
1. Do I render? Then skim? (What's difference between plaster)
2. Originally...
Hi all,
We are currently having the blown crepi on our house repaired. The house is concrete construction and has a thin layer of a type of crepi followed by paint (sorry, I don't know what crepi is in English, I am in France).
The builders have scraped off the loose crepi, and opened out any...
Looking for some opinions on this, new driveway with new rendered block
Wall.
50mm gap between beading and driveway block on the right and no gap on the left
Builder is suggesting that this is for drainage…. Makes no sense to me. Does this require completely removing and starting again or can...
I'm thinking of doing some work on the gable wall of our house and would need scaffolding installed. Set back ~30cm (is that gap allowed?), from the part of the wall to be worked on.
This would be to allow some repairs to cracks in the render of the wall, some repainting, and then installation...
Hi All,
I am after some detailing guidance with regards the interface between a stone Z slip plinth adhered to blockwork up to DPC, abutting a render finish above DPC.
The wall I am building will be dense concrete block (it is not built yet). The stone slips I am thinking of using are 25mm...
Hi all,
Looking for advice regarding render and DPC. Looks like old tar, the removed render had been serverely damaged by frost, the bricks too.
My thinking is, remove copes and use a modern DPC. Then ideally a lime finish like a this Lux product...
