If it had been true that the holes were only 5mm, it would be trickier.

BTW, that stock photo he posted looks like it has M8 holes. Definitely not M5 or even M6.

We've all been there. In my case t'internet was known at the time so it was either ask dad/elder brothers/uncles or buy a diy magazine.
The final possibility/probability was try what you think my work and learn from it. All good fun.
