Broken borrowed tool - please help

Pinch bar or digging bar, but I've not seen one with a bulbous pointy end before though, maybe it was blacksmith rather than machine made. The mushroomed end on the other end comes from many whacks with a mallet, it'd have started off straight.

If I was your neighbour I'd rather have that one back than a new one, possibly with contact details of a blacksmith who has agreed to fix it, as it looks like it's seen some action!

Not sure why you borrowed it if you don’t know what it is?(n) Admit it to the neighbour and just tell them you’ll buy a new one, surely they’ll know when you give them a none rusty one back, or were you planning on going the whole hog and buying a 2nd hand one from eBay?

Where is it broken? I see no break in the pics?

There is a crack half way along the shaft.

Is this the location?

If so Id say it shows clear evidence of an existing repair. Poorly done in some way? No way should you have been able to snap that rod. OOI, do the surfaces where it parted look corroded?

Or maybe it got bent, and someone heated it to the wrong temperature during straightening, or didnt quench it, and it got brittle?

Not that it matters - you can hardly return it broken and say "it broke where someone had done a bodged repair", no matter how true.

As others have said, fess up and ask him what hed like you to go and buy.

I think seeing as it happened over a month ago thatthe OP may have done something about this already.
Must admit, I don’t always check the date of threads, would help if they weren’t resurrected

Hi all,

I took your advice and 'fussed up straight away.

The bar has since been repaired. A new metal tube has been used a splint and welded to the spike to make it even more sturdy.

I have also been able to reciprocate somewhat with the loan of one of my tools - so the ledger is much more balanced than it was

Thanks for all the advice
