CV Boot Split All Way Around After Less Than 6 Months!!!

I like to see the 'traditional' British makes such as GKN.......but who knows where they come from these days!
German stuff is as good as it gets too.
John :)

Just 1 more thought

The small end of the boot may just have been secured too far along the shaft putting too much strain on the boot on full lock.

You would think that the grooves machined into the CV and the shaft would prevent that, but who knows?
John :)

When I replaced the CV boot n our Golf a few months ago, not only was there a choice of sizes for both ends, there was also a choice of length of the boot.

And if trying to fit a short boot to where the longer boot would sit, it would overstretch it

Thanks again for your suggestions. Will put one or two of them to the garage tomorrow, but always always wary of trying teach granny how to suck eggs.

This will poss be the last attempt before I take drastic action like spending more money on a new shaft. This problem is sapping my will.

4 pages already for a cv boot!!

Not sure if there are different options for Scudo, but looking at the Bailcast website they do universal boots with different lengths and end circumferences.

When I fitted boot 3 myself I was careful to make sure the ends sat in the grooves on the shaft and joint.
On the shaft end don't worry about where it sits, too much, especially if it feels like it's a bit far.

Let it sit where it feels right and secure it there.

Too much grease could be a problem, but that means two garages plus myself are all adding too much grease - which I can't believe. Also, don't forget the one I fitted didn't actually pull out of clip because I went Incredible Hulk on the crimping and nothing was going to shift that clip. So instead of pulling out of clip, the boot ripped all around it's circumference just inboard of the large clip immediately after fitting.

I've done a few CV joints, and the kits usually include a little pack of grease - a surprisingly meagre supply. Add too much and the grease will have an hydraulic effect, to force the cover off.

Thanks, yet another possible cause to add to the list.

When I did no 3 that tore off the joint soon after fitting, I didn't use the pack of grease that came with boot. Put some out of a tin of Granville cv grease I had. Believe it or not, I get through a heck of a lot of cv grease these days. In fact my van's economy is now measured in the number of miles I get to a tub of grease (MPGrease).

Hope I didn't spoon in too much when I was filling her up.

Anyone used J&R driveshafts in Brum? Any good. A new shaft for me is £65 inc next day del. Seems good and not worth messing around with more boots.

Have used them a few times.

OK. Not the best in the world but not rubbish.

Would use them again, and that's always a good sign to me

I probably did use more grease than was in a sachet. I filled the cup where bearing are level. Sounding like too much maybe.

Certainly nowhere near as much as this though -
