Decline in jam varieties

This is only vaguely related, but does anyone remember as kids, getting free Optrose Rose Hip Syrup from the NHS. It would have been in the late 1960s for me and my siblings.

I remember bottles of orange juice and malt or molasses. I was sent to collect them, from the local Post Office. I also remember Farley's rusks, I used to love them.

Yes, Mum had a choice of Optrose or orange juice. I used to go with her to the community centre, and she would be given about twenty bottles at a time. That might have been a month's supply. Or maybe three months.

Loved Farley's rusks. Very upset when we stopped having them!!

Yes, conserves have a higher fruit content and less sugar.

But I have had conserves in the fridge for weeks and they have never gone mouldy.

I have found that Aldi coconut milk has had the coconut content reduced.

I remember having rose hip syrup in the early 70s.
Dunno what brand.

Also remember my Gran buying Treetop orange squash with the bottle that tapered into the lid.

Community Centre?

Ah, you remember the benefits of a Labour government.

Do you also remember who snatched the issue of free daily milk from schoolchildren?

Edward Short (lab) in 1968, abolished free milk for over 11s, followed by Thatcher (con) for over 7s in 71

I keep smelling jam everywhere lately... it's those vape things. They smell of strawberry or raspberry jam.

That's where all the jam is going nowadays.

We got the Optrose free, and if it ran out, Mum bought Boots own brand.

There don't seem to be any major brands now. And it's really expensive! It looks like it's got loads of vitamin C, so I'm guessing that's why kids were given it for free. I liked it a lot more than Ribena, which is what we started buying when we stopped receiving it.

Careful!

That'll open up a fierce debate....

Think my fave jam is raspberry, but I love marmalade too.
I love raspberry J. but making it is a fiddly job to remove all those seeds so bearing that in mind i'd say Cherry J. is my currant fave. Recipes call for equal parts sugar-to-fruit but my sweet tooth must've fallen out over the years as i prefer to use half the amount of sugar. It gives room for the natural flavour of the fruit to taste.
